What is Drupal and can business use it?

You are here

In the early 2000's the web moved forward at tremendous speed, website owners were getting to the point that they were managing large amounts of content. This became time consuming and very messy. Imagine looking after a site like' The Age' newspaper or 'Choice' magazine online, the headache and pressure would be immense. What came from this is alot of web developers started creating sets of code and tools that would allow them to manage their sites in a dynamic way. That is where Drupal comes in.

What is Drupal?

Drupal is a Content Management System or CMS. In essence it is a way to make sure someone content is kept in an orderly manner. The other advantage of Drupal is in the word called Drupal meaning to Drop. Drupal is highly modular and to 'drop' code into its framework is easily implemented, this is great as it gives it the ability to become any type of website the developer wants.

The origin of Drupal

As discussed before people in the web development world were creating these Content Management Systems separately to manage information that was contained on their website. What started to happen in open source web development people started to swap their code bases between each other. Drupal came from a student who was sharing information via a website with his college friends. In 2001 he made his code base available to the world, then other developers started using it and adding to its modularity and the rest is history. Drupal's advantages

Because of Drupal's design it has many advantages in the world of web development as it is known today. This post really can't give it the respect it deserves as many people reading this will know. Below I have put together a list that will give the broad benefits of the Drupal framework.

  • Drupal has been in production environments for many years it has a track record of security.
  • Its development team is world wide and any issues that arise with it can be fixed quickly.
  • The framework is highly flexible and can be used for websites to e-commerce.
  • There are thousands of plugins that allow a website developer to implement code quickly and easily.
  • Plugins are developed across a large eco system of developers.
  • The software is constantly updated.
  • It's designed to be search engine friendly.
  • Website designs are easily implemented.

Drupals helps business strategy

The question is 'how does Drupal help business?' This is a relevant point as without business Drupal would not have come this far and serviced business for this long. The nature of Drupal as shown above allows for reduction in cost, security and site development are better supported and its highly flexible nature allowing for flexibility and modularity. There is however one important point that has not been mentioned, the ability for anyone to be able to add content to a website without the assistance of any sort of web developer. This saves hundreds of man hours and saves business time and money. Drupal allows business to have a high quality intranet or internet website for a fraction of the cost and have the flexibility to add content at will. This tool is fantastic and has given the website owner an excellent framework for their online presence.
